Abstract

This Study was conducted to clarify the meaning and structures of caring experiences of the chronic schizophrenic patients¢¥ families by the means of phenomenological methodology. The data was collected from Dec. 9, to Dec. 20. 1998 by participatory observations and depth interviews of 4 participants.

The results of study were as follow:
There were identified 18 themes, and 9 basic structures in the meanings of the caring experiences. These basic structures could be further categorized into two main aspects, one with negative aspects, and the other with positive ones.
The negative aspects represent groomy, uneasiness, feeling sorry, feeling sense of lackness, social isolation, economic difficulties, and enduring the hardship.
The positive aspects contained efforts to find new meanings by caring experience of the patients without loosing hope, compassion and the sublimation and sympathy toward the people in similar situations, and finding meaning, of life.
The families of chronic schizophrenic patients were burdened with the sole responsibility of chronic schizophrenic patient were burdened with the sole responsibility of taking care of the patients, feel sorry to the patient, economic iifficulties, social isolation. However, there showed great efforts to challenge the parental responsibilities.
Based on the aboved findings, the follows are suggeted.
1. Mental rehabilitation nursing programs for psychiatric patients in the
community need to be developed and untiliged more.
2. It is necessary to carry out the research about the specific interventions, which focus on the meanings of life by caring process. in terms of, parents.
